When photographer Susie from Chasing Moments sent over this lovely engagement shoot I couldn't wait to share it with you

She has clearly spent the time & effort to get to know the couple & boy does it come across in the photographs!

This is how Susie approached this shoot...

"Engagement shoots are a great idea for all involved. For the couple in question, it’s a
chance to get to know your photographer a little better and see the way they work. It’s
a chance to get used to the idea of being photographed before your big day. For the
photographer, it’s a great chance to find out a bit more about your couple and see how
they interact with each other. It is also a brilliant opportunity to be creative and try
things…well….a little bit different.

It was great chatting with Jonny when he first contacted me in 2011. We talked about
photography A LOT. Jonny photographs cityscapes and told me that a few of his
images had been published. Very cool.

So now I needed to find out a little bit about Joanna, to plan a shoot that would reflect
both of their personalities. The tricky thing was that the engagement shoot was to be
a surprise. Some stealth, straight to the point, emailing was needed. I decided to send
Jonny the following questions:

1. What are your and Joanna's favourite bands/ type of music?
2. What are your top 3 films (if thats possible?!...feel free to list more if you like!)
3. How did you and Joanna meet?
4. How would you describe Joanna in 5 words or less?
5. How would she describe you?
6. What sort of things do you like doing together?
7. Where are your favourite places to visit together?
8. I know you are also a very keen photographer, so who's images do you find
inspiring?

The responses were fantastic and evidence that Jonny and Joanna were a really fun
couple. Jonny used the words: lovely, beautiful, bubbly and joyful to describe Joanna
and told me that they liked visiting sweet shops together amongst other things. He
painted a picture of a couple who never took themselves too seriously. Hurrah!

Scouting locations in a city like London is ace. The surroundings can often change
dramatically with a mere bus hop.

Battersea Power Station was the perfect choice for Jonny & Joanna’s engagement
shoot. Those massive cooling towers would provide the backdrop for the gritty,
candid street photography that Jonny wanted to see and to be honest…they rather
reminded me of Willy Wonkas chocolate factory. Perfect!

So armed with lots of sweets and smoke bombs (those cooling towers haven’t worked
for years, unfortunately) I met Jonny and Joanna in Pimlico on 30th December 2011.
What a great, fun finish to the year.

The Beautifull Cotswolds, Yurts & Lanterns..

So then... with home life approaching normality again & the kids packed off to nursery I can at last get back to taking care of my lovely blog which has become a little neglected over the past months, & what better way to kick off the new year than to bring you Phillipa & james's wonderful day captured beautifully by photographer John Day

Philippa and James got married in a Humanist ceremony within the grounds of Stanway House in the Cotswolds. Stanway is a stunning Jacobean manor house and provided the backdrop to the days events. It was certainly not your run of the mill wedding, with the ceremony held in a huge yurt in the grounds and the wedding breakfast and evening celebrations held in the rustic tithe barn, the venue was adorned with lots of red details as a nod to James' Chinese heritage, including many lanterns brought over with family that attended.

Such a great wedding to shoot, with all of the unusual elements, but best of all was Philippa and James' sense of fun - which was most definitely shared with their families, all making it one of my favourite weddings of 2011.

A Good Old Hackney Knees up! Ed Peers Style..

Ever since starting this whole thing I've wanted to feature a wedding from Ed Peers,

Ed's ability to create visually stunning, contemporary images' whilst still being observant enough to make sure no 'moment' is missed make him world class & I am extremely proud that he is part of our website.

Sinan & Sani's wedding was all about great friends, family and good times. They were so incredibly relaxed which was reflected throughout the whole day. They didn't want a traditional wedding and everything revolved around having a good good time.

The couple got married at the Stoke Newington Town Hall just around the corner from their house. A super venue decorated with taste. The ceremony was held in the impressive Council Chamber and reception held in The Assembly Hall – an awesome room with huge stage and mirror ball. Entertainment was provided by a folk band and then DJ. Chinese lanterns topped off the day which is always such a great spectacle.

For their portraits we made use of the Stoke Newington High Street that is packed full of character and a nearby park. We had a blast…

Fun Laughter & Love!

Photographer Victoria Phipps got to know Jemma and Tony a little when they met up for their pre-wedding shoot in the Spring... "they hardly stopped giggling and I knew their wedding would be relaxed and full of fun" & this indeed was to be the theme that ran throughout thier big day.

The setting for Jemma and Tony's moving wedding ceremony was a romantic glass house nestled in the beautiful gardens of the Abbeywood Estate on the fringe of Delamere Forest & after the initial nervous excitement had subsided the couple relaxed & picked up where they left off on the engagement shoot, the overwhelming feeling I get from looking at this wedding is fun, laughter & love...what a perfect combination!!

Victoria has done a brilliant job of capturing the excitement of Jemma & Tony's big day, my favorites are the photographs taken during the speeches.. the expressions on their faces are priceless!

This wedding is the perfect antidote to a gloomy Monday afternoon, I hope you enjoy it.

West Country Woodland Engagement Shoot

So with our regular blogger Louise up to her armpits in nappies & other baby related goo, she's reluctantly handed the controls of the WA Blog over to me for a while, apologies in advance for any poor grammar, dodgy spelling & lapses into non wedding related topics (music/motorcycles etc) I'll try to keep on track.

Anyway enough waffle let's get down to business.....

Being a Bristol boy myself nothing makes me happier than promoting super talented, local photographers. Albert Palmer is one of the regions finest & when I saw this stunning Pre Wedding shoot I leaped at the opportunity to share it with you lot.

Bert's use of light & composition in these photographs is a delight & his relaxed informal approach is clearly reflected in the way Joanna & Richard look so completely at ease in front of the camera.

Fantastic work, I hope you enjoy these photographs as much as we have.

Loungelover Love

The venue for Jay and Reena's pre wedding shoot was the ultra cool Loungelover Bar in East London with it's stylish & eclectic interior providing the perfect setting for the couple to really let their hair down. The moody low light in the venue also provided photographer Allister Freeman with a few challenges, but with the sensitive use of lighting & ably assisted by Joshua Archer the session produced some great moments

One of the essential skills a wedding photographer must have is flexibility, to be able to adapt their style to suit their client’s needs, so in a departure from his usual documentary style approach Allister Freeman photographed the happy couple in a way that clearly reflected their fun & energetic personalities. With a considered mix of posed & natural shots he has given Jay and Reena a beautiful collection of photographs they'll treasure long after they are married.

The couple has booked Allister to document their wedding later this month & if the energy of this shoot is anything to go by it's going to be a blast!

House for an Art Lover

During a visit to a psychic Ruth was told she would 'meet her husband at a party she didn't want to go to'... So she spent a whole year going to dodgy parties before she finally met him at one of her colleagues parties. (she does maintain however that she did want to go to the party!)

Martin and Ruth married in St Patricks Church, Coatbridge on the 1st of April and chose the spectacular House for an Art Lover for their reception. They didn't want to be under any pressure when it came to wedding photographs as neither were comfortable in the camera, however after some friends had recommended photographers Chris and Gillian the couple found themselves in very capable hands, Martin and Ruth were able to meet with Chris & Gillian a few times in the run up to the big day, meaning they were completely at ease - which is obvious from the stunning photographs!

Ruth's makeup was handled expertly by Eye Candy Scotland with some sparkling finishing touches added thanks to Flo & Percy

Picnic Paradise

OK, I admit, it's not exactly glorious June weather here today but I am determined, yes positively determined, to embrace all things summer! And I couldn't resist sharing this little gem with all you brides and grooms planning a summer wedding or engagement shoot when it came my way.

I love the idea of heading out into the sunshine after your ceremony and relaxing on the lawn with all your guests and a (very tasteful) picnic! Those lovely folks at Cath KIdston have come up with this gorgeous hamper to make your outside picnicing a rather stylish affair!

I can taste the cupcakes and Champagne already...

Maria and Henry's beautiful bank holiday engagement shoot

Back in the blogging hotseat, I couldn't be more excited to make my first post in a while something fantastic. And when Rebecca from Rebecca Wedding Photography sent us this stunning engagement shoot I couldn't wait to post them! I'm sure you'll agree these shots are gorgeous!!! Rebecca has captured the romance of the newly engaged Maria and Henry without any cheese - just simple, understated, beauty and elegance.

It was a truly beautiful bright bank holiday monday, the location was The Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew and the super sweet couple I photographed were Maria and Henry. We had such a fantastic time, it was really relaxed and fun, those gardens are a just a stunning place with so many different photographic opportunities. Our two hour engagement shoot swiftly turned in to four as we wandered around the grounds and I enjoyed every single minute of it! We got some lovely romantic and intmate shots. I just love Maria and Henry and the time they spent with me on this sunny bank holiday.

They first met in 2003 at the Victoria branch of FX Travel/Eurochange where Maria worked. Henry came in, smiling at the exotic beauty behind the counter, little realising that his Big Bus uniform combined with his trendy round glasses and school scarf made him look like Harry Potter. Even with the absence of a wand, there was magic in the air!

Henry proposed in 2010 By a tranquil lake, next to Sackler Crossing in Kew Gardens, hence the special engagement shoot location. The wedding is booked for October and I'm so excited to be photographing their special day, so watch this space for the wedding coming in late October!

Iain and Joanne's cinematic celebration

With a venue like Clandon Park, couple Iain and Joanne could have starred in their own Merchant Ivory film! The spectacular property bult in the 1730's for the second Lord Onslow gave the couple's day a real sense of the dramatic. From the brides arrival in a vintage Bentley to the Tapestry room ceremony setting, drinks reception in the Marble Hall topped of with a wedding breakfast in the former vaulted stables, Iain and Joanne planned a spectacular day.

The cinematic theme continued at the wedding breakfast with tables were named after classic wedding films including Father of the Bride, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and even The Hangover! The couple chose wedding photographer Mark Lucas to record their day on film. "Joanne and Iain wanted a relaxed, informal feel to the day and I knew I could get fantastic shots without being too intrusive" said Mark. And he certainly captured some beautiful photographs of the day.

When weddings don't quite go to plan...

Well, it sure was a lovely day on Friday wasn't it!! The Duchess looked pretty darn fantastic as did the groom and I must admit to a little tear in my eye when they finally tied the knot! Even the rumours of wind and rain didn't transpire and the day went off without a hitch (let's not mention some of the dodgier hats...). Of course, the Royals did have a helping hand or two planning their big day and I'm sure there was a contingency plan in place for every possible eventuality.

I'm a bit of a planner myself, and a worrier, meaning I spent a scary amount of time thinking about the 'what if's' of my own big day! I was covered for pretty much everything, though didn't quite think the venue would mix up my lovingly prepared table plan, meaning some interesting tables which I only noticed as I looked around during the speeches. In the end though, it really didn't matter - the happiness of the occasion meant even that grumpy Aunt enjoyed herself without the family buffers I had planned!

This week, Sinead, WA's advertising exec gives us her take on those wedding 'challenges' we all face and some of our fantastic Wonderland Avenue photographers have contributed an array of stunning photographs that show the amazing images they can capture faced with any obstacle!

It goes without saying that all of us spend a considerable amount of time thinking about and planning our wedding day. Probably the most common phrase I hear when I am speaking to bride and grooms to be is, 'I just want everything to be perfect on the day'. But can we ever really achieve perfection? Even the most meticulously planned events will experience a little hiccup here and there. The route to making the day perfect lies in how you cope when these things happen..do you freak out and turn into Bridezilla from Hell or do you, in true Brit fashion, keep calm and carry on?

On my own wedding day I'm glad to report that nothing too fundamental went wrong - after all my then lovely fiancee turned up at the right place at the right time and more importantly said all the right things on the day. My family behaved themselves (I come from a very large irish family and if you have ever been to an Irish wedding you will know that sometimes the heady mix of too much Guinness and high emotions can lead to some, let's say, interesting results). All in all we had an enjoyable, memorable and happy day.

There were things that were not perfect...
the stained glass window at the front of the church had to be replaced the week of our wedding and unfortunately was not ready by the big day so instead we were greeted by a very large sheet of MDF covering most of the front of the church;
I had chosen to walk down the aisle to the lilting sound of the Irish (uillean) pipes. Unfortunately I had not realised that they need warming up before they start playing and I walked down the aisle to a loud wailing noise, the tune only starting when I actually reached the top;
the priest managed to throw Holy Water all over the Best Man during the blessing, which resulted in me getting a full blown and inappropriate fit of the giggles.

But heres the interesting thing - nobody really remembers any of that - not even my husband. When I ask some friends recently what they remember most about their day they all said pretty much the same thing. They remember a day packed full of friends, family, love, laughter and picture perfect moments!

Now thats what I call a perfect day!

The sun is shining, love is definitely in the air! A few gorgeous photographs to share with you this afternoon thanks to fab Bristol Wedding Photographer Albert Palmer.

Albert has captured some stunning shots of Bristol couple Richard and Joanna's engagement shoot. The couple are getting married in May at Elim Bristol City Church. Their reception will be held in a marquee pitched in the grounds of their Grandmother's beautiful Cotham Park house. The day will have a rustic vintage style with lots of personal touches, and with weather like this, just as well the couple have some plans for keeping cool, including a tin bath filled with ice and refreshments and their very own ice cream cart!

We cant wait to see Alberts photographs of Richard and Joanna's big day! Thanks again to Albert for sharing these gorgeous photographs with us.

Spring is in the air!

So we're all going a little bit wedding crazy in the UK at the moment - it's brilliant!! And what's more appropriate than a seriously stunning London wedding - I think Kate and Wills could take a little inspiration from this one!

Wedding photographer Martins Kikulis has taken some stunning shots of Lucy and Pat's special Spring day at Londons Kew Gardens. The ceremony was held at Kew Gardens, followed by a 12, yes that's 12, course meal at the Phoenix Palace!

Melanie and Russell's vibrant vintage day

Here at WA, we love a vintage wedding and photographer Mark Murfitt has shared a gem with us! A little mid week treat for everyone looking for vintage wedding inspiration and beautiful photography.

After a glamourous proposal a few days before New Years Eve in the Hollywood Hills overlooking all of Los Angeles at night, couple Melanie and Russell planned a relaxed but stylish day with a vintage twist. They took their time getting all the details just right and made sure there day had lots of personal touches including hand-made decorations, favours and invites.

Melanie and Russell chose Oaks Farm in Surrey as their venue and the day was all about vintage style. The bride walked down the ailse in an Augusta Jones dress and Christian Laboutin shoes with a hairpiece she had hand-made. The groom wore Christian Dior while the bridesmaids donned contrasting 50's style dresses with flower and butterfly hairpieces made again by Melanie.

The bride walked down the aisle to Bach played by a solo cellist and the couple chose readings from Alfred Tennyson and T.S. Eliot for the ceremony.

The fantastic flowers from Kane's Florist added a colourful accent to the day with bright sunflowers and gerberas for the hand tied bouquets and an eclectic mix of button holes - Melanie's favourite was worn by the best man: a bright orange gerbera and an orange chilli pepper!

The wedding breakfast was a vintage treat, tables were decorated with soft pink roses and blue and purple hydrangeas displayed in china teacups. The couple chose a vegetarian menu catered by Blends Catering with a chocolate cake decorated in cream roses. Birdcages, bunting, sugar rose cupcakes, a candy counter and light up dancefloor all made this vintage day one to remember and were exactly what the couple wanted. Melanie's advice to other brides? "Do exactly what you want to do and do not listen to what other people tell you they think you should do!"

The guest list dilemma!

Your big day is approaching, venue and photographer booked, dream dress picked out so what's next? It's time to take a look at the guest list! It's pretty easy to rack up a huge number of family and friends that you'd love to come along and share the day but of course budget and venue mean a long hard think about who you really want to be there is in order. One of the big questions many couples face is whether or not to invite children to the wedding. As you get older, the decision gets more political as the baby boom years start!

I've got to admit to being on both sides of the camp here. At my own wedding, we did have children and I found it really added to the day and our wedding photographer captured some really fun photographs of the kids and guests. Then again, when I took my 6 month old to a friends wedding and he started to sob inconsolably as we arrived at the church, meaning I ended up outside while the ceremony took place, I did think it would be quite nice to have left him at home and seen our friends get married!

It's a tricky question, and ultimately depends on what each couple wants and what is possible at the venue. If you do decide to invite children, it can be a great chance for your wedding photographer to catch some gorgeous moments of those innocent little guests!

Hi again and before I go any further I have to say thank you to everyone at WA for making me feel so welcome. I'm really excited about working together!

In the various conversations I have had recently about all things weddings; there seems to be one issue that is guaranteed to cause some, shall we say, discussion, and that is the issue of whether or not to include children on the big day. Opinion on this matter was very divided with some strong views on both sides. One the one hand if you are from a large family then including all those nieces, nephews and cousins (not to mention cousins’ children) will add not only to your overall numbers but to the budget also. And who hasn’t heard those stories of the ceremony or the speeches being ruined by a screaming baby or tantruming toddler. The other argument of course is that no wedding is complete without cute kids in even cuter outfits dancing and enjoying themselves late into the night just like everyone else!

If you are including children in the day I have pulled together some ideas that I hope will make the day go smoothly for everyone.

Consider hiring a childminder/nanny for the day who can keep the children occupied rather than them being the focus of attention especially during those keys moments such as the ceremony or the speeches.

Ask the venue if you can hire a separate room or space which can be designated a children’s area. If the budget allows you could even hire a children’s entertainer or a simpler and cheaper idea would be to have some children’s DVDs available for them to watch. You may find that their parents will appreciate these touches too as it allows them some free time to enjoy the festivities.

Your carefully select gourmet menu may not be to every child’s taste, so think about creating a separate kids menu (it doesn’t need to be chips and nuggets) and maybe some additional snacks during the day such as fruit, carrot sticks and some simple sandwiches etc.

There are lots of great companies that can supply goody bags which can be left on the table in place of favours or you can very easily create your own with some pens or crayons, colouring books games etc. If you have a designated kids table you could also supply some play doh or bubbles.

If you are having a garden party or have some outside space then giant Jenga or other lawn games are always really popular and not just with the kids.

Think of ways that you can include the children on the day ; could they hand out favours for example? Kids love to feel important and having some simple jobs they can help out with during the day will keep them involved. Be flexible though and if on the day they are suddenly too shy or unwilling to help out, don’t worry about it.

Most importantly I think if you are having kids there don't get too worried about what might happen. Interruptions are nearly always met with laughter and smiles and some of the best wedding photographs I’ve seen are of gorgeous children dancing away just like everyone else. However if having read this you are already feeling a bit nervous then you can of course decide not to include them. As long as the invitations are clear you will probably find that most parents welcome the chance of a day off!

There's no doubt that organising your wedding is one of the biggest events you'll ever take on! Everything from flowers to favours are meticulously chosen - I can't even begin to calculate the time I spent getting everything just right. Then just as you are starting to feel a tad jaded with all that organising, the big day arrives - and it's gone in a flash. Humph!

That's why it is so important to take your time choosing your wedding photographer and to find someone who can offer the skill, style and experience to capture those all important photographs on the day.

I think one of the greatest talents of a fantastic wedding photographer is to really document the atmosphere of the day and here is one wedding where photographer Lyndsey Goddard has definitely done just that.

Lyndsey shot Charli and Alan's February wedding at the glorious Stubton Hall, one of Bride's magazines "100 best wedding venues in the world". The couple added some extra special touches to the day which was filled with live music and songs performed by friends of the bride who is an operatic actress. There was even a surprise burlesque performance from the bride, her friends and her mum!

With such a beautiful venue, stunning couple and colourful day, there were certainly plenty of opportunities for fantastic wedding photographs, but as you'll see, Lyndsey has not just captured images but what the day was all about. The joy, tears, fun and emotion of the wedding really come accross and looking at them, you almost feel you were there.

I'm sure you'll love this wedding as much as I did! Thanks to Lyndsey for sharing these with us.

Happy Mother's Day!

It's that time of year again to make your mum feel really special! Here at WA we decided to mark Mother's Day by asking some of our fantastic wedding photographers to share some wonderful wedding photographs showing mothers and their children on their son or daughters wedding day. Your wedding day is definitely one filled with emotion and if you're looking for a meaningful gift on Mother's Day, there might just be a special picture captured on the day that your mum would really appreciate!

Thinking of a destination wedding?

Spring is in the air and I can feel summer wedding planning buzz all around! I remember starting to plan my own wedding about this time of year and 5 years on spring still loaded with anticipation for me! Of course it was fairly straightforward for us with a wedding in Scotland and venues, suppliers, wedding photographers just a few hours drive from where we were living. But what if you decide to have a wedding further away from home?

Many couples are now choosing to have destinaiton weddings, combining their special day with a once in a lifetime trip. Increasingly couples are also choosing to take their ideal wedding photographer with them, making sure they get the photographs of a lifetime too. Lucky for us, some of our fantastic Wonderland Avenue photographers have contributed some stunning images from weddings they have shot accross the globe to give you destination brides and grooms out there some beautiful inspiration.

We're also delighted that experienced destination wedding photographer Jordan Banks of Source Images has put together some really useful top tips to bear in mind. A huge thanks to Jordan and to all of our fantastic Wonderland Avenue photographers who have contributed some gorgeous images.

Things to consider when choosing a destination wedding photographer - top tips from Source Images

Get your photographer to arrive at least two days prior to the ceremony. This is important, firstly because if there are any unforeseen delays or cancellations there will still be another day in which to make alternative arrangements. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, it will provide time for your photographer to scout locations and attend any pre-wedding parties or social events you may have planned. This will allow your guests to become familiar and comfortable with the photographer and vice versa. Experience has taught us that this can afford great opportunities for your photographer to capture additional shots of friends and family in a more relaxed environment.

Do not be worried that your photographer may not have visited the country or venue before, a good photographer will adjust to their environment and possibly consider it more exciting to be shooting in a different location; I personally thrive on shooting in new locations.

Ensure your photographer has the equipment and appreciates the importance of ‘backing up’ all images before heading home. For most this is obvious but it's worth checking they are prepared for the unexpected. We generally keep all images on the cards, copy to a laptop hard drive and ‘back up’ again by copying to a portable hard drive. We keep and hand-carry each set of images in a separate locations; the last thing you want is for a lost bag or an opportunist bag snatcher to take off with all your images and backups.

Check that your photographer has backup cameras and lenses; it can be very hard to identify loan shops at short notice, especially when shooting outside of major cities. We will often identify a source of emergency equipment in advance and carry 24hr contact numbers with us.

Book well in advance!! This may sound like a sales pitch but it really isn’t. Good photographers really do get booked quickly and if you have put the effort into finding a stunning location/venue and getting all your family and friends abroad you deserve to have a qualified professional to showcase the day. Whilst writing these pointers I had to turn down a shoot in the Amalfi coast. Although I am free on the date, it didn’t leave me enough time to get back to the UK for my next shoot (frustratingly this is not the first time this has happened either) - flights will also be cheaper the earlier you book them, providing an opportunity to save a few pennies.

Finally, regardless of the destination of your big day, ensure that you and your photographer are adequately insured for the unknown and unexpected – it can happen.

It's Thursday afternoon and time for a little photographic diversion from the lovely Claudia Carter of Carter Imaging who has created Photography Events UK, a single online resource documenting all photography related events.

Here's Claudia with a bit more about her exciting new venture:

“Photography Events UK was created due to a number of reasons.. Firstly, because one day I was looking for an online resource that documented photography related courses or exhibitions in Scotland, as I was keen to learn as much as possible in my starting up period. I spent a while on this and couldn’t find anything substantial in one online place. I did some research within my own group of friends and networks and found that this is something that people would find useful, especially those looking to break into the photography scene who may not have direct access to the larger networks.

The second boost of inspiration was sourced from a tweetup drinks occasion that I arranged after one of the days of SWPP London in early January, and it was a huge success (with over 25 attendees, including American photography stars Becker of The B School and David Jay of OSP Forum). Following that, I started a Facebook group so that UK Photographers could organise future meet ups or shoot days in one place, without being limited to 140 characters on Twitter. As photographers began discussing future dates and plans, I thought that it would be convenient to have an online calendar documenting all of the event details so that others could find the information easily.

I created a plus site to my Showit site and downloaded a Google iCal feed, added a blurb and hit ‘publish’. It received great feedback, so I sat down and planned how I could combine the two concepts. From a strong interest in creating a UK wide networking community, the final ethos behind Photography Events UK was born.

We aim to be the single online resource documenting all photography related events and we take a lot of our inspiration from the news websites. We want to give you up to date information quickly so that you can spend more time working on developing your work. It will showcase featured photographers and venues and list exhibitions, courses, seminars, 1 to 1 training, meetups, shoot days and more. It will always be completely free to use and soon will utilise newsletters, image galleries and member logins.

To begin with, until the word gets out properly, we will be sourcing the majority of the events but we have been receiving very good feedback so far and quite a few photographers and venues have submitted their events to be added already. Just see it as free exposure! The new website is Wordpress based and will continue to develop over the next few months.

We will be offering advertising space to photography brands, venues or photographers themselves at competitive rates - with an introductory discount. Please contact me if you want further information.

Simon and Lauraâs stylish Shoreditch day

There’s something special about venues that have had new life breathed into them – I can't resist a building with bundles of history that’s been sympathetically restored to its best and has a real use today. These are extra special places that have been salvaged and lovingly revived and if they can be used as a wedding venue, even better!

A great example of a fantastic venue that has enjoyed the full restoration treatment is East London’s Shoreditch Town Hall which was originally built in 1866. It provides a city centre wedding venue which oozes style and has become a central part of the Shoreditch community since it’s re-opening five years ago. As you may have guessed I’m a bit of a Shoreditch fan and when Ben Smith at Big Day Pictures sent WA through some beautiful photographs of Simon and Laura’s Shoreditch Town Hall wedding, I was thrilled!

The couple got married in early 2011 and chose the restored venue to hold their special day. It was a particularly appropriate choice for architect Simon!

The ceremony and dancing were held in the gorgeous Edwardian Assembly Hall - it’s high ceilings and marble walls added to the stylish couples day. The evenings entertainment was provided by a Beatles tribute band who got guests from the ages of 3 to 83 up on the dance floor!

Julia and Dannyâs unconventional Groucho Club Wedding

Our fabulous featured photographer Galloway Photography has very kindly shared some stunning photographs from Julia and Danny's unconventional Wedding. Here's a little more about the day...

When Julia and Danny planned their wedding day, they wanted an intimate, relaxed day with friends and family that they could really enjoy. London’s famous Groucho Club in the heart of Soho provided the ideal venue for the couple who had a small ceremony and enjoyed an amazing wedding breakfast in a private dining room at the Groucho, before being joined by friends and family in the evening.

“This meant the day was extremely relaxed and we didn’t need to make the effort to take that ‘time out’ for ourselves that everyone always advises. It also meant we didn’t have to do the catering en mass so the food was AMAZING! Danny being a foodie, this meant a lot. At 6pm our extended family joined us for a champagne reception and our friends joined at 8. Doing it this way meant we got to see and speak with everyone without feeling pressured.” says Julia.

Julia admits dress shopping was a little stressful but she opted for the beautiful Priscilla of Boston Sophie which gave her the laid back feel she was looking for – not to mention what a gorgeous dress it was! She had actually seen the dress before she and Danny got engaged so fate was definitely at work on this one!

Beautiful Calla and Arum Lilies provided a simple but sophisticated accent to the fabulous venue. The couple chose two versions of ‘Wonderwall’ for their first dance, mixing Ryan Adams slow version with the Oasis original half way through which brought friends and family to the dance floor!

Julia and Danny chose Galloway Photography to capture the day. Neither the couple nor their families were comfortable in front of the camera, so an engagement shoot prior to the day meant they had a bit of practice before W day! David and Richard from Galloway Photography made sure the couple relaxed in front of the camera – you would never think that this couple were a little camera shy from the stunning photographs David and Richard captured!

Wonderland inspiration - capturing perfect memories!

I’ve been on a bit of a nostalgia kick recently, I think it’s the imminent arrival of baby number 2 that’s set me reminiscing about friends/family/freedom! And some of my most treasured memories are in the pages of my wedding album – which I love!!! It’s not just the dress or all those little touches I pored over in the months beforehand that made the day special, it was definitely the memories that were made with family and friends. Lets face it, how many opportunities do you have to get them all in one place together, having fun!!

Having an amazing photographer to capture the atmosphere of the day is a must. I do think it’s one of the best investments I made. The brilliant thing is a creative wedding photographer will find quirky and inventive ways to show the day, moving away from traditional line up shots and really reflecting what your special day was all about.

This week, we’ve got the lovely Sinead, WA’s advertising exec to give us her take on wedding memories and some of our fantastic Wonderland Avenue photographers have contributed stunning images to show just what you can do!

Weddings weddings everywhere yet not a one for me! Having tied the knot now 13 years ago, I can only live the joy of weddings vicariously by poring over all the fabulous photos that we get to see here at WA. The one (major) downside of working in this arena is that with every wedding I browse over, I find another great idea that I wish I had thought of all those years ago. Don’t get me wrong, we had the most amazing wedding. Even though it was not what you would call an extravagant wedding, it was everything that my husband and I wanted from our day. But I can’t help that feeling I get when I see some great idea from someone else’s day and think how it could have worked at my wedding. For both of us our family and friends are the most important things in our lives and so we wanted to involve them as much as we could in the big day. And in the end no matter what song I walked up the aisle to, what flowers I had in my bouquet or what table centre pieces we chose, the one thing that everyone remembers from that day is the atmosphere that was created by having all those special people there. No amount of planning and forethought can create that. All you need to have are the right people and definitely the right wedding photographer!

My husband is a bit of an obsessive when it comes to photography and insisted on wedding photography being a big spend. I’m pretty glad he did insist though – we have wedding photographs that make me laugh, cry, sigh…our friends and family really come to life through the photographs and 13 years on I’ve got to admit it’s the best and most memorable day of my life!

Kirsten and Mark's Delicious Dorset Day!

It's always a real pleasure to see gorgeous wedding photographs and to see just how unique every couple's big day is. Kirsten and Mark really put their own stamp on their summer wedding in Dorset. From the beautiful bridesmaids dresses to the vibrant flowers, the couple made sure their wedding had the relaxed summers day vibe they wanted.

The ceremony took place in the grounds of Parley Manor in Dorset where the reception was also held. The sun blazed down and the couple had thought of everything to make sure all their guests had an amazing time - even providing a big screen to watch the world cup!

Kirsten and Mark chose Liam Bergin of Thirdberg Photography to capture the day. The fact that Liam was an old friend of Kirstens meant a very relaxed bride in front of the camera as you'll see from the stunning photographs below.

Gary and Sorcha's Snowy Great Fosters Wedding

It's almost March and spring is on the way (fingers crossed!) but I'm still swooning over those snowy winter weddings! So when wedding photographer Clare West sent WA these stunning photographs of Gary and Sorcha's Great Fosters Wedding, I couldnt resist another trip into winter wonder weddings!

The snow meant some of the guests weren't able to make it but it didnt ruin Gary and Sorcha's December day in Surrey. Beautiful snowy scenes, toasty open fires and a gorgeous location made this a day to remember.

English Country Romance - Anna-Mari and James

There's nothing quite like a bit of romance to lighten your week! Wedding photographer Melanie East not only captured the romance of couple James and Anna-Mari's day but their story is a pretty romantic one too.

Although both brought up in Bath and with plenty of friends in common, it took the hand of fate to bring Anna-Mari and James together in halls of residence at Oxford Brooks uni in 1998.

Flash forward 10 years and James asked Anna Mari to marry him during a romantic walk around Babington House lake on Easter Sunday. He must have been pretty confident as Anna-Mari's twin sister and parents were also there! Of course she said yes and the couple were married in an English Country inspired wedding at Steeple Ashton with a reception afterwards at Sheldon Manor in Wiltshire.

This is definitely one for the romantics like me - gorgeous photographs, gorgeous couple, gorgeous day!

Super Sunday!

Phew - it's been another crazy WA week. We are so excited about the number of wedding photographers getting involved and engaged couples finding the site!!

It got me to thinking just how important it is to be comfortable with your choice of wedding photographer and to know that you can trust them to get those irreplacable memories down on film. I must admit to being a tad camera shy before our wedding. This was largely due to my inablility to smile without a slightly deranged expression on my face and rabbit-in-headlights glint in my eye! To say I wasnt 'at one' with having my photograph taken would be an understatement! That's why my lovely hubby-to-be suggested an engagement shoot, though he did couch it in slightly more romantic terms...

And he was right to recommend it! Not only did we have a chance to become more comfortable being photographed together, but we had the opportunity to get to know our wedding photographer - and for him to get to know us. Best of all, we now have a gorgeous set of photographs that capture the original line up - 'the two of us' - with that unmistakable newly engaged sparkle!

It's definately worth discussing an engagement shoot with your wedding photographer. Joanna Brown's beautiful February engagement shoot for couple Agata and Alex shows just why it's something to consider! I love these stunning photographs, they really capture not only the magical February light but also a gorgeous couple in love. Anyway, enough of my babbling, here they are!

Zoe and Joe's beautiful summers day

Ah...as those cold February nights draw in and I spent another night bundled up by the fire with my wooly socks on, I was delighted when photographer Emily Quinton sent me some of her beautiful photographs from Zoe and Joe's June Wedding in Evesham. It warmed the very cockles of Wonderland Avenue's heart!

The venue was St Mary's church in Studley, follwed by a reception at Dumbleton Hall in Evesham. As you can see from the gorgeous shots, the sun shone all day long and a wonderful time was had by all. The couple live and work in New York so it was an extra special occasion for them to celebrate with friends and family.

This September I was invited to a very beautiful venue in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, to capture the wedding day of a great couple. It really was a pleasure to be their photographer as they looked so natural in the shots.

When Rob and Tamsin got engaged in Burton on Water in the Cotswolds in September 2009, they decided it was such a romantic setting they wanted to hold their wedding there too. The couple are from Essex, a long way from Cotswolds, however they decided to invite all their friends and family to join them for the whole weekend and have a great party! The wedding had a touch of a 50′s English tea party vibe and they hired a fantastic 50′s rock and roll band, Johnny and the Zephrys ..they were brilliant!!

Super Sunday!

So it's been another weekend of wind and rain, although, coming from Scotland I try to love the more dramatic weather the UK has to offer! Just as well as my own wedding day was a pretty dramatic one with heavy rain and even some hailstones!

Luckily we came prepared with a few ideas to make sure the rain didn't ruin our photographs. Even though we hoped for a sunny June day, we made sure we had a Plan B. Spending time talking through ideas with your wedding photographer is well worth doing. How about coming up with a list of possible under cover locations near your venue where you're protected from the weather and can relish the dramatic atmosphere the rain can create?! Can you take take advantage of your venues' sheltered architecture? And of course some stylish brollies for you and your guests are a must.

Its worth bearing in mind that even on a dull wet day a good photographer will know how to use whatever ambient light is available without resorting to the very unflattering effect of on-camera flash. An excellent example is this beautiful wedding shot by Alan Hutchinson. Through his skillful understanding of light & how it can be used Alan has delivered a superb collection of photographs in very challenging conditions which caught WA's eye this week!

Susie & Richard's pre-Christmas wedding

Picking a real wedding post for our big launch day has not been an easy job but when this little beauty dropped into the Wonderland Avenue inbox my eyes just lit up, A very large thank you to photographer Ben Smith at Big Day Pictures for sending this gorgeous winter wedding our way.

I set off for Susie & Richard’s pre-Christmas wedding in Saffron Walden with some trepidation. The freak snowfall that marked the final weeks of 2010had left some decidedly perilous driving conditions and when you’re the photographer, even skidding into a ditch is no excuse for arriving late!

It was all worth it though because the weather conditions contributed in the most romantic way possible to what turned out to be a picture-book Winter wedding featuring Christmas carols during the service, an open fire, a festive colour scheme and even a herd of (rein)deer in the grounds of the reception venue.

Susie and Richard were a pleasure to work with, gladly going above and beyond the call of duty for the sake of the pictures, especially Susie who, at one point, happily risked frostbite by standing in her Jimmy Choos ankle-deep in snow. This despite the fact that I didn't even ask her to! A lovely couple and a fabulous wedding.

50's Rock & Roll Glam!

Bride and Groom Danielle and Carl got married in Lincoln this summer with true rock and roll vintage glam with Bethan and Syriol from Haywood Jones Photography there to capture the big day

They decided on a rockabilly theme and asked all their guests to dress up in rock and roll 50s attire, there were even a couple of Elvis's in attendance!

We're Live!!

After months of nail biting & sleepless nights the boffins at Wonderland Avenue have pressed all the buttons & flicked all the switches & our lovely website lives!! I finally finished shooting the images for the site this week & I'm really chuffed with how they worked out..mainly due to louise doing a rather fine job with the styling. We've still got a few niggles to sort out but basically we're there.

We're always on the look out for new talent to join WA & would love to hear from any wedding photographers...super talented of course
